Photoshop Masking Advanced ( Part 5 )

Similar to the Background Eraser, is the Extract feature. It deletes information based on color and tonal values and incorporates the advanced color decontamination technology as well. For more information, see the PDF file titled Extract.

Another way to create a mask is by using the composite or individual channels tonal values of the image and the Blend If sliders. This technique produces unique results that can make the image appear as if it’s breaking apart or dissolving away in certain tonal ranges that you define. For example, in this image to mask the hands back and reveal the clouds, I choose Layer > Layer Style > Blending Options. In the Layer style dialog box I set the Blend If option set to Gray and began moving the black slider (triangle) for “This Layer” towards the right. The black areas of the hand image become masked continuing with the lighter values as the slider is moved further to the right.

To achieve a softer looking mask, each of the sliders can be split into two. Holding the option (Mac)/Alt (Win) key, drag apart the slider into two smaller triangles. The distance between the triangles represents the tonal range where the mask is being applied at decreasing opacity.
